1953 Debutante Karen Dress

1953   "Debutante - Karen" Outfit #63 missing apron
Item #C-G-53K63
 $50.00
Any of the early "named" outfits are so very sought after, especially the Debutante series.  This is "Karen" pinafore dress and panties from 1953.  It is supposed to have a white lace apron and straw hat but those pieces are missing.  Still it is very hard to find these early dresses and would still make a darling outfit without them.  Or, perhaps you have the apron and/or hat in your collection already.  If you see this dress in mint condition it is a beautiful turquoise blue.  However it is very common to see some of these early taffeta outfits, fade to a pale gray or lavender color.  I believe that is what has happened to this one as the stitching is still blue but the dress is very evenly gray.  I believe that this is something that happens to the fabric regardless of whether or not it was exposed to light, as the panties, which obviously would have been hidden, are exactly the same color.  This is just one of the mysteries of collecting Ginny items.

This dress is in overall wonderful condition.  The fabric is still crisp though it is wrinkled from storage.  I do not believe it has been ironed.  There is some rusting of the hook/eye closure on the back (see photo below).  The dress is tagged with the early thin VOGUE in script tag which was used primarily in 1952 with carry-over into 1953.

At any rate, this is a wonder and hard to find dress to add to your collection and would look darling on your strung Ginny.
