FOR SALE: 1954 MUFFIE
by Nancy Ann Story Book Doll Co.
Item Code #D-NA-54MUF    $150.00

A sweet example of a straight leg walker Muffie.  She is referred to as a Type #2 because she has painted eyelashes, as well as molded eyelashes, but does not have eyebrows.  The eyebrows came the following year.  When I found her she had no arms so I have added authentic Muffie arms (see below).  She has a very nice dark auburn original wig that I re-braided into braids as appropriate, and added the little blue bows to match her shoes.  I had this little dress in my supplies and had always questioned whether or not it is for Muffie because it has the characteristics of the Muffie clothing, but there is no tag and I have not found it shown in any of my reference books.  I strongly suspect that it is hers and does look darling on her.  There is some faint staining of the dress.  I gave her these blue unmarked side snap vinyl shoes and rayon socks which may also be Muffie shoes since her shoes were not marked like Ginny's were.  The socks are a bit stretched out.

The slip is permanently attached to the dress.  The panties are light pink cotton trimmed in a delicate lace.  The panties did not come with the dress, but were on the doll when I found her.  They seem to match the dress very well.

When I found this doll she had no arms.  I had a pair of authentic arms from another '54 Muffie, but they were missing the metal "S" hooks.  I went ahead and strung her arms with elastic through the holes instead of waiting to find arms with "S" hooks.  They are quite secure and allow her to pose now.

Muffie has deep blue eyes.  Her lashes are strong and prominent.  The molded lashes are a bit faded on the tips but could be enhanced with a little black  permanent marker.  Her sleep eyes operate easily, opening and closing.  She is a walker, meaning her head turns from side to side when her legs are moved back and forth.  She works well.  I've noticed that the few of these '54 Type #2's I've had seem to have heads that will slightly rock or bob when the doll is slightly moved.  Almost like she is saying "yes".  I've not noticed this on other year dolls.   She has no cheek rubs and no blush to speak of but I don't know that she is supposed to.  Most early Muffie dolls I've seen don't seem to have any blush.  Her bottom lip paint is slightly lighter than the top but it doesn't look worn, I believe it is how she came from the factory.

Here are the markings on her back.

There is some residual glue showing at the temples which is quite common on these old wigs and there is a bit of the gauze wig strip that shows at the top of the head.  I do believe that this is her original wig.

I hope you agree that this is a darling Muffie and she would love to be a part of your collection.
